I've been to wikipedia for a general overview of this career, but would like to find some study material before classes begin in may. Does anyone know of a source for information- other than this great forum, of course-about property appraisal? Thanks, and I'll see you in the field

The Appraisal Institute has some good information and an overview of the profession on their site. Unfortunately I haven't posted much on this forum and am not allowed yet to post a url. Use your search engine and search for "The Appraisal Institute" and you'll get several hits though.
Also, while this isn't an on-line resource, I often suggest to those who are interested in the profession to obtain a copy of the book "The Appraisal of Real Estate" by the Appraisal Institute. It's quite costly, so I would suggest buying it from a used book seller (they are available for sale on line and I believe the 12th edition is most recent.) Even better, you might borrow it from the local library. If they do not have it, it likely could be borrowed from another library through an inter-library loan.

It's a "tough read" with over 700 pages, but if you read it, you might find you are interested in appraising. If you read it and hate it, well . . . :)

There's another book by the Institute called "Appraising Residential Properties" which is a good source of information about the process if you think you might only be interested in that type of appraisal...but I suggest reading the "The Appraisal of Real Estate" first. Many appraisal schools use this book as their text.

yeah i agree with john... i had found facts on Appraisal Institute on some search engine. it has lots of information regarding appraisal and other sources in it. try it too im sure you will get to learn more.

The best sites are owned and operated by the Harris Company, Real Estate Appraisers and Consultants. They can be found on the first page of GOOGLE when you do a search for : "commercial appraiser.'

The LOoP, ranks about 7
Appraisers Talk Back is about 4
and the Harris Company REA/C ranks anywhere from 1-3 depending...;)
